The advancements in modern glycobiology have led to many groundbreaking revelations and observations that have challenged historic and longstanding information. These finding have created many new concepts, or paradigms, in the field. This article by Dr. Rick Cummings summarizes many of these historic beliefs and translates them to modernized paradigms that fit what is currently known in the field. This review lays a framework to demonstrate how far this field has evolved with regard to the structures, functions, and expression of glycans in biology. These new paradigms demonstrate the essentiality and novelty of glycans and their biological functions, and reflect the incredible progress made in the study of glycobiology.
