What orientation will I receive prior to starting the residency?

Each resident will attend a general hospital orientation, a general orientation and training program within the central pharmacy, and a more specialized critical care pharmacy orientation. This training will prepare the resident for the service component of the residency as well as provide insight into the operational workflow and policies and procedures of the pharmacy and medical center. If applicable, orientation to MCPHS University (school of pharmacy) will be coordinated during this time.

What are the staffing requirements?

Residents will staff every third weekend and up to two major holiday(s) depending on the needs of the pharmacy department. This will include both day and evening shifts to provide the resident with a broad experience of pharmacy practices in the critical care setting.

How will the program address my individual residency goals?

Required "core" rotations provide the resident a broad experience to develop skills necessary to care for a wide variety of critically ill patients. A range of elective rotations allows the residents to customize their program to match their interests. Flexibility within the program allows residents to select elective rotations to maximize their exposure to their areas of interest. Active participation by the residents in designing their program is encouraged.

What teaching experiences are available in the program?

BIDMC’s affiliation with MCPHS University provides the resident with a number of teaching opportunities. The resident can facilitate therapeutic seminars/patient case discussions at MCPHS University, participate in the critical care elective course, and/or lead critical care NAPLEX review sessions. Additionally, intra-departmental and inter-department presentations, journal club presentations, and resident-led topic discussions with students and PGY1 residents, all serve to enhance the teaching skills of the residents.
