Bringing on Research Students from Affiliates

Harvard Medical School

As a BIDMC Principal Investigator, you may be interested in bringing on a student from an affiliate school, such as Harvard Medical School (HMS), to conduct research during their program. There are a number of avenues for hiring an HMS student into a research lab at BIDMC

HMS Pathways Program:

  • Full-Time Summer Research (between first and second years of program).
    • HMS students have a free summer between their first and second years of study in the HMS pathways program, and are available to carry out full-time summer research during this period. Principal Investigators are expected to match a stipend provided by HMS for this period of research. The Office of Student Engagement and Experience (OSEE), in collaboration with the Shapiro Center for Education, currently manage a program to support administrative operations of students in this program, and provide supplemental didactics and extracurricular activities to these during the summer, titled the BIDMC Shapiro Scholars program
  • Supplemental Research during program
    • HMS students may choose to carry out, non-credit bearing supplemental research opportunities at any time during their program of study. They may conduct these part-time or per-diem around their course schedule, rotations, etc.
  • Scholarly Projects
    • Scholarly projects are a requirement for pathways students to conduct research into a chosen health-related topic, question, or issue in-depth with a mentor. These students may or may not need access to BIDMC resources to conduct their research.

Important Considerations:

  • Any of the categories above require completion of a Research Intake Form. It is vital that all research opportunities, regardless of type, are centrally tracked.
  • Onboarding steps are determined by the OSEE based on the role (i.e. access needed), whether the role is on or off site, and if the student has already been onboarded for a previous position at HMS. These will be communicated directly.
  • Any position that will be funded (either on BIDMC payroll or by an external entity) requires onboarding
  • If a student is currently carrying out a rotation at a BILH entity or involved in another role, while the Office of Student Engagement and Experience will onboard the student, they may not be tracked in Workday due to current system limitations. Their record will be tracked in REDCap, and OSEE can assist with any system limitations that may present themselves due to this constraint.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to the Office of Student Engagement and Experience if you have any questions or concerns about this information.
