Any research conducted by an individual in school (regardless of academic level) or at a BILH site (paid or unpaid) requires review by the Office of Student Engagement and Experience (and other teams as dependent on case), and proper onboarding into a research student or postdoctoral research student position. The onboarding process ensures that proper steps are completed and that each candidate, with access to BILH systems and resources, have been through the following:
- Proper reviews of the role and scope of work by the Office of Student Engagement and Experience
- Compliance Security reviews
- Required, legal CORI background checks
- Employee Health Screenings
- Proper trainings assigned to research workers (including research safety and data integrity trainings)
The following are examples of research that require onboarding:
- Research that supplements education (i.e. conducting research while in school)
- Research conducted during school breaks or gap years
- Research conducted as part of a course/for academic credit (i.e. Capstone projects, HMS Scholarly Projects)
- Short term research assignments
In short, any experience that requires a new hire to access any systems to conduct research, and/or be on-site, requires review and onboarding.
Any questions about whether a person needs to be onboarded, and the proper role, should be directed to the Office of Student Engagement and Experience for further review and discussion.
