Training for Advanced Endoscopy
The Center for Advanced Endoscopy at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is the largest referral practice for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in New England, and is the second largest in the nation. Advanced endoscopy fellows receive rigorous clinical training in all aspects of modern advanced endoscopy. A core focus of training is pancreaticobiliary endoscopy, and there is broad exposure to ERCP, ranging from standard techniques to altered-anatomy ERCP and cholangioscopy.
EUS training includes a focus on both diagnostic EUS and interventional EUS procedures, including:
- Pancreatic necrosectomy/pseudocyst drainage
- EUS-guided biliary access
- Fiducial insertion
- EUS liver biopsy
Advanced endoscopy fellows also receive extensive experience in:
- Endoscopic mucosal resection for large colon polyps
- Luminal stenting
- Early esophageal cancers
- Duodenal/ampullary adenomas
- Gastric neoplasia
There is broad exposure to novel endoscopic techniques including optical coherence tomography, cryotherapy, laser lithotripsy, gastric balloon placement, and digital cholangioscopy and pancreatoscopy.
Interested fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the full-range of achalasia treatment including pneumatic dilation and POEM. Most fellows complete one year of training, although some elect to pursue additional time for further clinical training or research.
Collaboration Training Opportunities
Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School has a long tradition of training national and international leaders in interventional endoscopy.
Our fellowship graduates move on to provide leading edge endoscopic care for patients with complex gastrointestinal conditions in communities around the world, with a particular focus on early diagnosis and treatment of both benign and malignant GI tract conditions, including pancreatic and esophageal cancers.
At BIDMC, a core aspect of the training program is exposure to new and emerging techniques in the field of GI endoscopy. To that end, we are also committed to providing opportunities for collaboration and learning outside the walls of BIDMC and Harvard Medical School.
BIDMC Traveling Fellowship in Advanced Endoscopy
The Traveling Fellowship provides an opportunity for each fellow to arrange a supplementary training experience or course in a particular novel technique or device in GI endoscopy which will be of benefit to them clinically, and which will help them establish their independent career as an expert in advanced endoscopy. The Traveling Fellowship is open to all advanced endoscopy physician trainees at BIDMC. The Traveling Fellowship award requires a brief application, which provides a description of the proposed training experience, and the expected impact on the fellow's anticipated career trajectory.
Harvard Catalyst Certificate in Applied Biostatistics
The Certificate in Applied Biostatistics offers a comprehensive introduction to biostatistics in medical research, which is available, by application, to Harvard Medical trainees. The online course includes a review of the most common techniques in the field, as well as the manner in which these techniques are applied in standard statistical software. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to choose an appropriate study design, calculate the sample size needed to complete a study, analyze the collected data, and communicate the results from their experiment. BIDMC advanced endoscopy fellows interested in this opportunity should know that the course requires four hours per week, to be completed outside of the already-rigorous clinical training program.
Rabi Kundu/BIDMC Alumni Research Award Fund
This fund is named in honor of Dr. Rabi Kundu, a former advanced endoscopy fellow at BIDMC and a renowned interventional endoscopist and mentor. The research award is intended to support advanced fellows at BIDMC in order for them to travel and present their research findings at national conferences. This award is supported by the BIDMC Advanced Fellowship Alumni and honors the memory of Dr. Kundu's contributions to the field, and his mentorship and teaching of countless fellows and colleagues.
About the Application Process
