Healthcare Epidemiology Track

Infection Prevention & Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Healthcare Epidemiology

In collaboration with the BIDMC Division of Infectious Diseases, the Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) teams offer individualized second-year training tracks for those with specific interests in the fields. Both tracks offer the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary teams across a variety of settings. Please see the following infographs for more information regarding each specific training track.

Advanced Healthcare Epidemiology Training (Third-Year)

For fellows pursuing a career and future leadership roles in Infection Prevention & Control/Healthcare Epidemiology or Antimicrobial Stewardship (e.g. hospital epidemiologist, medical director of an IPC or AS program, or healthcare epidemiology researcher), there is the opportunity for a third-year of advanced training at BIDMC. This advanced training track has been a formal, funded track since 2009 (created by Dr. Sharon Wright) and has had great success in training future leaders in the field (see “Past Trainees” section below).

Fellows in this advanced training year are expected to dedicate at least 50% of their time to hands-on training on-site at BIDMC in the practical aspects of Infection Prevention & Control or Antimicrobial Stewardship. Fellows will also gain broader experience collaborating with Infection & Prevention Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship teams across Beth Israel Lahey Health, a vast healthcare system that includes 14 community and specialty hospitals, academic medical centers and teaching hospitals.

Most fellows in this training track will complete basic course work in the Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), if no prior training in epidemiology and statistics. Some fellows choose to complete an MPH degree after PCE, however this is not required. All fellows in this track will complete a mentored research project(s) in healthcare epidemiology topic with goal of presenting abstract(s) at a national conference (e.g. SHEA, ID Week) followed by manuscript submission for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
