Transplant Hepatology
About Our Fellowship Training Program
The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Training Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-accredited intensive clinical training program for applicants who have completed a full three-year GI fellowship. This program is one of only 17 in the country accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for transplant hepatology and the only one in New England. It provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient clinical experience, as well as didactic teaching, preparing fellows to diagnose and manage complex liver diseases and care for pre- and post-transplant hepatology patients.
Fellows will gain extensive experience in both transplant and advanced hepatology, with responsibilities including the care of pre- and post-transplant liver patients, performing procedures such as routine upper and lower endoscopy and liver biopsy, and educating and supervising housestaff. Outpatient clinical activities involve patient care in the Transplant Hepatology and General Hepatology Clinics, participation in transplant observational activities, and involvement in quality improvement projects. The program also covers immediate post-operative management of transplant recipients.
By the end of the fellowship, trainees are expected to be proficient in all aspects of transplant hepatology, meeting the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) requirements for board eligibility in Transplant Hepatology and attaining UNOS certification. BIDMC, one of four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, offers a dynamic environment with access to cutting-edge research and teaching, ensuring a robust educational experience for fellows.
