Transplant Hepatology

About Our Fellowship Training Program

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at BIDMC is a one-year ACGME-accredited program in a high-volume transplant center offering intensive clinical training in the management of liver transplant patients and those with advanced liver disease. Fellows gain extensive inpatient and outpatient experience, including performing procedures including liver biopsy and supervising housestaff, while also meeting ABIM Board Eligibility requirements. This fellowship can be completed as a fourth year after completing GI fellowship or, for internal applicants, as a combined GI-Transplant Hepatology fellowship with dual certification in 3 years..

Fellows will gain extensive experience in both transplant and advanced hepatology, with responsibilities including the care of pre- and post-transplant liver patients, performing procedures such as routine upper and lower endoscopy and liver biopsy, and educating and supervising housestaff. Outpatient clinical activities involve patient care in the Transplant Hepatology and General Hepatology Clinics, participation in transplant observational activities, and involvement in quality improvement projects. The program also covers immediate post-operative management of transplant recipients.

By the end of the fellowship, trainees are expected to be proficient in all aspects of transplant hepatology, meeting the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) requirements for board eligibility in Transplant Hepatology and attaining UNOS certification. BIDMC, one of four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, offers a dynamic environment with access to cutting-edge research and teaching, ensuring a robust educational experience for fellows.
