Clinical Hypertension Fellowship

Multidisciplinary Clinical Hypertension Fellowship

The BIDMC Multidisciplinary Clinical Hypertension Fellowship is a one-year program that provides multidisciplinary training for physicians seeking expertise in the evaluation and management of complex hypertension.

The fellowship integrates core elements of internal medicine, nephrology, cardiology, and endocrinology and prepares graduates to deliver specialized care for patients with hypertension. In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to lead quality improvement initiatives and contribute to ongoing clinical research being conducted at our Comprehensive Hypertension Center. The program emphasizes team-based care, health equity, and implementation science, positioning graduates to serve as leaders in clinical practice, academic medicine, and public health. Upon completion, fellows will be eligible to sit for the American Hypertension Specialist Certification Examination.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold an MD or DO degree.
  • Applicants must anticipate completion of residency training in family medicine, internal medicine, or med-peds by July 1, 2026.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply during their final year of residency.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent US residents with a resident alien permit or green card. The fellowship cannot sponsor J-1 or other visas.

Education and Didactics

Hypertension Fellows will attend a weekly hypertension conference and weekly ABPM rounds. Over the course of the year, the topics will cover the breadth of hypertension diagnosis, evaluation, and management. They will also be able to attend hypertension-focused didactic sessions, journal clubs and Grand Rounds for each of the core clinical fellowships (cardiology, endocrinology, and nephrology as well as general internal medicine) as appropriate.  Depending on interest, fellows will also have the opportunity to train or collaborate with other affiliated specialties that are impacted by hypertension such as neurology (stroke or autonomic neurology), obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine specialists, geriatricians, interventional radiologists (for adrenal vein sampling), interventional cardiologists (for renal denervation), endocrine surgeons, etc.

Fellows will be encouraged to attend the American Heart Association Hypertension Scientific Sessions and will have the option to attend one other specialty focused conference of their choice during their fellowship.

Research Opportunities

Hypertension Fellows will be matched with a research mentor doing work in an area of research that aligns with their interests. They will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research in the Hypertension Center or associated divisions which includes clinical trials, quality improvement initiatives, and cohort studies. Fellows will be expected to submit abstracts to national meetings that align with their area of study.
